Our Take:

By far one of the most impressive pieces of technology we’ve had the pleasure of using. Unprecedented potential to change the way we learn, entertain and build. While we had originally been skeptical on the presence of app development surrounding the tech, we were pleasantly surprised with the availability of immersive experiences that we could see using.

From Apple:

Apple Vision Pro is the result of decades of experience designing high‑performance, mobile, and wearable devices — culminating in the most ambitious product Apple has ever created. Apple Vision Pro integrates incredibly advanced technology into an elegant, compact form, resulting in an amazing experience every time you put it on.

A singular piece of three-dimensionally formed laminated glass acts as an optical surface for the cameras and sensors that view the world. It flows seamlessly into a custom aluminum alloy frame that gently curves to wrap around your face while serving as an attachment point for the Light Seal.

Built on the foundation of macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, visionOS enables powerful spatial experiences. Control Apple Vision Pro with your eyes, hands, and voice — interactions feel intuitive and magical. Simply look at an element, tap your fingers together to select, and use the virtual keyboard or dictation to type.

In visionOS, apps can fill the space around you, beyond the boundaries of a display. They can be moved anywhere, scaled to the perfect size, react to the lighting in your room, and even cast shadows.

Environments let you transform the space around you, so apps can extend beyond the dimensions of your room. Choose from a selection of beautiful landscapes, or turn your room into a personal movie theater with the Cinema Environment. The Digital Crown gives you full control over how immersed you are.

Apple Vision Pro helps you remain connected to those around you. EyeSight reveals your eyes and lets those nearby know when you’re using apps or fully immersed in an experience. When someone approaches, Apple Vision Pro simultaneously lets you see the person and reveals your eyes to them.

Spatial experiences on Apple Vision Pro are only possible through groundbreaking Apple technology. Displays the size of a postage stamp that deliver more pixels than a 4K TV to each eye. Incredible advances in Spatial Audio. A revolutionary dual‑chip design featuring custom Apple silicon. A sophisticated array of cameras and sensors. All the elements work together to create an unprecedented experience you have to see to believe.

To get a really good idea about the basics of how the headset works we recommend this video from Apple (especially just the first few minutes): Apple Vision Pro Guided Tour.

You can absolutely share the headset with others, and you can do this without completely resetting the device, by using guest mode. It's important to use guest mode because the Vision Pro needs to be calibrated separately for each individual, or it can be very hard to navigate and make gestures.

To enter guest mode, navigate to control center by finding the green dot above your field of view and swiping down on it > click the on/off switch icon > click the icon of a person with dashed lines around it > transfer headset to guest for them go through the calibration steps.

If you are with a group, it is also quite a lot of fun to mirror the AVP to a TV or a Mac using Airplay. Many TVs support Airplay natively and if you are on the same WiFi network, it will show up as an option. The other people in the room can help you navigate, and they get to see what you see (although it is in two dimensions, it is still fun to watch). If you are with someone more technically savvy, or with more experience with the headset, it can be very helpful to let them see what you see so they can give you advice.

To mirror to mac: Navigate to control center by finding the green dot above your field of view and swiping down on it > click the on/off switch icon > click the icon of a mac with the vision pro in front of it.

If you want to use the Vision Pro to replace your Mac's display, here's a great video from Apple on how to do that: https://youtu.be/mD1ITit0PCQ?si=nhNqiTVrvtqlU9vK

Unfortunately, if you use glasses, they will not fit under the Apple Vision Pro. Apple suggests buying corrective inserts for the AVP if you need glasses to see well.

Our Take: It is true, without glasses, it can be a challenge to use the headset, but depending on how bad your natural vision is, despite this it can still be fun. The issue comes up particularly when it comes to reading the text on the various objects in the apps. If you are standing up we found it possible to walk closer to the menus and screens. When we did that, the text was larger and it was easier to read. If you can figure out how to navigate around, the immersive experience can still be very impressive.

The AVP Quick Start Guide includes step by step instructions on how to set up and charge the device.

Please refer to the AVP Quick Start Guide for more detailed instructions and helpful diagrams and photos.

This set up document from Apple may also be helpful: https://support.apple.com/en-us/120144

Below is a very brief synopsis of the start up process:

  1. To function, the AVP battery pack cord must be attached to the AVP at all times. To attach, insert the metal disc at the end of the battery pack cord to the matching metal circle connection on the AVP. Align the small circle on end of the battery pack cord to the empty circle on headset connection and turn clockwise until it aligns with the closed circle. This should provide power to the AVP and turn it on.
  2. Put on the AVP. You can customize the fit using the small adjustment disc on the right side of the AVP headband.
  3. Once the AVP is on, you will likely be prompted to adjust the display using the Digital Crown button on the top right of the AVP. The AVP will walk you through several steps that align the AVP with your specific eye and face shape.
  4. Once your fit has been set, bring your iphone or ipad near the AVP. Once your chosen apple device is detected by the AVP, it will automatically walk you through the quick setup process. Make sure to have your Apple ID and login information available before you start using the AVP. While the AVP can automatically link with most Apple devices and thus obtain your Apple account information by linking to your Apple device, you will need your Apple ID password to perform the hard reset of the AVP prior to returning it to Immersion Rentals. Additionally, if you wish to backup any data from the AVP to your Apple iCloud, you will need your Apple ID and password to do so.
